New report summarizes extreme weather in 2024 – and suggests resolutions
The international collaboration World Weather Attribution (WWA) has launched its first report summarizing the studies conducted on extreme weather in 2024. The report “When Risks Become Reality: Extreme Weather in 2024” contains both a review of the most important events during the year, an analysis of dangerous heat wave days in 2024 that are linked to climate change, and suggestions for resolutions for 2025.
Some of the key messages:
- Extreme weather reached dangerous new heights in 2024.
- Climate change contributed to the deaths of at least 3,700 people and the displacement of millions in 26 weather events we studied in 2024.
- Globally, climate change added on average 41 additional days of dangerous heat in 2024 that threatened people’s health, according to new analysis by Climate Central.
- Many extreme events that took place in the beginning of 2024 were influenced by El Niño. However, most of our studies found that climate change played a bigger role than El Niño in fueling these events.
- Record-breaking global temperatures in 2024 translated to record-breaking downpours.
- The Amazon rainforest and Pantanal Wetland were hit hard by climate change in 2024, with severe droughts and wildfires leading to huge biodiversity loss.
- Hot seas and warmer air fueled more destructive storms, including Hurricane Helene and Typhoon Gaemi.
Their proposed resolutions:
- A faster shift away from fossil fuels.
- Improvements in early weather warnings.
- Real-time reporting of heat deaths.
- Finance for developing countries.
